IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
It is the most popular exam that measures English proficiency in today's world and is accepted worldwide. It is accepted by educational institutions at all levels, business world, immigration authorities and government agencies.
There are two types of IELTS exams: IELTS Academic and IELTS General. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same in both exams, but the topics of the Reading and Writing sections vary depending on the type of exam.
The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of the IELTS exam are taken one after the other without a break. The Speaking section can be taken at a different hour or day than other exams.
The IELTS Listening exam is designed to measure many listening skills. In the Listening section, you are expected to understand detailed information, follow the speaker's views and the development of the discussion. In the exam, you are listened to dialogues and monologues of native English speakers on everyday topics. The IELTS Listening exam takes an average of 30 minutes and has 40 questions. An extra 10 minutes is given to copy your answers from the question paper to the answer sheet.
The IELTS Reading exam is designed to measure reading skills. In the Reading test, you are expected to understand the general topic of the text and make inferences. You will need to write the answers to 80 questions on the exam paper in 120 minutes.
In the IELTS Writing test, you are expected to be able to express your ideas clearly and use a rich vocabulary and correct grammar. For the academic essay, you need to write at least 150 words in 60 minutes; for the general essay, you need to write at least 250 words in 40 minutes.
In the IELTS Speaking test, you are looked at how well you can convey your ideas, information about daily topics and ordinary experiences. The speech, which will last approximately 15 minutes, will examine your fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
The British Council and IDP organize IELTS exams in major cities such as Gaziantep, Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Istanbul and Izmir in Turkey.
